Another yummy concoction (the green monster smoothie) made from the Magic Bullet. Seriously, this kitchen appliance has changed my life in a mere 24 hours. Totally worth the money. I’ve never been a breakfast person as I usually don’t have time in the morning, but with the magic bullet, I can actually have some semblance of breakfast. This shit is life-changing.

Green Monster Smoothie
1 cup of Almond Milk (I used vanilla almond milk for extra sweetness)
2 handfuls of spinach
1 tablespoon of Almond butter (I used peanut butter since that’s what I had in my pantry)
1 banana
2-3 ice cubes

BLEND and Enjoy!!!!!!!!!!!!

noraleah:

Refinery29 has a great roundup of cheap NYC eats, from a $1 slice to a $45 three-course menu at Le Bernadin — with a shout-out to my hands-down thrifty favorite, Xi’an Famous Foods. Mmmmm … Xi’an.

Convenience is expensive, but it doesn’t always have to be in this very expensive city. Most of these restaurants, I’ve eaten at, but yet $1 slice still leaves me wary.

Happy National Hot Toddy Day!

Today is National Hot Toddy Day! A hot toddy is a delicious drink made with honey, lemon, cloves, hot water, and the spirit of your choice (usually whiskey, brandy, or rum). It’s the perfect way to warm up on a cold winter day, and a few sips can also relieve cold or flu symptoms….which actually helped me over the weekend! Hot toddies originated in Scotland sometime during the 18th century. While the exact details are unknown, historians believe that the recipe was developed to make the taste of Scotch whiskey more palatable. (Apparently the women of the day didn’t care for the smoky, peat flavor.) One theory suggests that the word “toddy” evolved from “Tod’s well” (also known as Todian Spring), the water supply for Edinburgh.

I have pine mouth!!!…wait? what???

That’s right people. I have pine mouth.

What the f—k is pine mouth you’re probably asking? I never heard of it myself until I did some research today because every morsel of food that I’ve ingested in the last 24 hours actually tastes like a bitter, metallic flavor, always starting in the back of my mouth. I initially thought that the homemade chocolate chip cookie I picked up yesterday afternoon from the deli on 52nd street was actually homemade with rat poison, and I was seeping rat poison from my mouth….but that was just me being neurotic. I decided to do a simple google search JUST to see if my symptoms were something that I should probably go to the doctor to check out, but my search results yielded TONS of results…most notably the response from Dr. Weil that gave me some calmness to my neuroticism:

Strange as it may seem, the bitter or metallic taste you describe can come from eating pine nuts. In fact, there’s now a name for it: “pine mouth syndrome.” The medical term is cacogeusia. Based on what I’ve read, the change in taste develops 24 to 72 hours after you eat pine nuts and can last a few days or even as long as two weeks, but it does eventually go away.

And it so happens that my friend gave me a large bag of pine nuts on Saturday, and I’ve been adding a bunch of them into my morning granola and yogurt the past few days….thus the pine mouth.

Homemade granola…super tasty, and incredibly easy to make. Why has it taken me so long to do this?
